1978 Kawasaki KZ650 SR

1978 Kawasaki KZ650 SR

This is the first production year of the SR series KZ650. In a time period where “factory custom” bikes were very much in vogue, Kawasaki did the right thing by taking a motorcycle that was already great and making only mild alterations to the design. In this case, pushing the KZ650 closer to a cruiser designation.

Notable design features include cast wheels (the rear reduced to a 16” rim), dual-disc front brakes, and a single disc in the rear. Aesthetically, the KZ650 SR is factory-equipped with a longer seat, higher bars, fatter tires, a redesigned tank , and touches of chrome — such as gauge covers and chain guard. Ultimately, Kawasaki created an ergonomically correct cruiser with a strong motor, that was a blast to ride.

Our model features a Kerker aftermarket 4-into-1 exhaust kit, which is period correct and was dealership-offered the year this KZ650 SR was sold. The battery, coils, spark plugs, wires, and caps are all new. It has fresh oil and new oil filters. It has been given a general tuneup: the carbs have been cleaned and synced, the points have been cleaned, and the timing set. There is a dent in the left side of the tank.
